Leadership from the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center honored employees last month with the 2013 DAISY Awards, which were presented during the Annual Nurses Week celebration held the week of May 8.

“DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System,” said Associate Director of Patient Care and Nursing Services Ruth W. Mustard, “and the national DAISY awards are presented to nursing staff for the compassionate work they do for our Veterans.”

The award came into existence after a foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes.

“As the family brainstormed what to do in his memory,” said Mustard, “the one really positive thing they could hold onto from the experience of his eight-week hospitalization was the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses.”

This quarter’s DAISY Award winners here at Dorn VAMC who reflect that unique compassion provided by VA nursing staff are Registered Nurse Sandy Cobb, Operating Room; Registered Nurse Karen Teal, Emergency Department; and Licensed Practical Nurse Wardean Hall.

“Congratulations to these nurses for the care they provide,” said Mustard, “for they have our profound gratitude for what they do for our Veterans.”
