The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center will host a 2K “walk and roll” event May 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to coincide with National Employee Health and Fitness Day.

“Worksite wellness activities enhance employee engagement and contribute to a more productive and healthy workforce,” said WJB Dorn VAMC Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program Manager Mary Ellen Howell, Ph.D. “Last year, the event here was extremely successful and we hope to collect even more in-kind donations and involve more participants in support of wellness and homeless Veterans.”

The WJB Dorn VAMC event is just one of many 2Ks taking place at other VA facilities across the country on May 15.  In conjunction with the event, VA is willing to accept gifts and in-kind gifts to be used to carry out existing VA programs for homeless veterans.  However, there is no requirement for a donation to participate.

The 2K registration will be held at Dorn VAMC, 6439 Garner’s Ferry Road, Columbia, SC, in Building 106, Room D100, and participants should plan to arrive no later than 11:15 a.m. The 2k Walk and Roll is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will begin just outside Building 106. In the event of inclement weather, participants should register at Building 106, Room D100.

VA’s employee wellness program is known as WIN (Wellness Is Now) empowers employees with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to create a culture of health and wellness.  Further, WIN encourages employees to use their appreciation of wellness to inspire Veterans to live healthier lifestyles.  WIN integrates traditional occupational safety and health programs with health promotion activities, addressing both workplace and worker health and helping VA employees to do their important work of serving the Nation’s Veterans.

Dorn VAMC Community Based Outpatient Clincs will also host 2K Walks at the locations. Times vary, so please contact the local clinic for details. For additional information and more event details on the walk at the main campus in Columbia, please contact Mary Ellen Howell at (803)-776-4000 Ext. 6563 or via email at Mary.Howell2@va.gov.
