Ms. Carolyn L. Adams Appointed as Interim Director at WJB Dorn VAMC

It is my pleasure to announce Ms. Carolyn L. Adams is appointed as Interim Director at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center effective May 5, 2013.
Prior to her appointment, she honorably served as Director of the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC, Charleston, SC, from 2010-2013, where she led the facility to be recognized as a VA/DoD Joint Venture with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy to enhance healthcare services through a shared Optometry Clinic and Ophthalmology Program. Under Ms. Adams’ leadership, the facility expanded its research program and served as the VISN7 referral site for Bariatric Surgery. She was also instrumental in ensuring the medical center was approved as an Orthopedic and Robotic Center of Excellence providing a robust orthopedic program and the daVinci surgical robotic program for VISN7 facilities. Ms. Adams also led Charleston VAMC as a partnership site for the VA Nursing Academy in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina School of Nursing.
From 2007-2010, Ms. Adams served as Director of the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VAMC, in Salisbury, NC. Previous to that position, Ms. Adams held the position of Associate Director of the Salem VA Medical Center. Other key leadership and staff positions throughout her distinguished career include serving as the Primary Care Manager for the Dayton VAMC. Ms. Adams was also a Program Analyst for the CARES Commission in Washington, D.C. Other assignments include Chief, Nutrition and Food Service, Dayton, Ohio; Dietetic intern at the University of Kentucky; adjunct part-time professor for the University of Kentucky, Wright State University, and Sinclair Community College; Staff Assistant to Director, Lexington, Kentucky VAMC; Administrative Section Chief for Nutrition and Food Service and Clinical Section Chief for Nutrition and Food Service.
Ms. Adams serves on several VA committees including Secretary Eric Shinseki’s “Fix the Phones” Committee; Deputy Secretary Scott Gould’s Information Technology Government Performance Project; the Joint Task Force Performance Management and Accountability Committee; and the Improvement and High Reliability Steering Committee formerly known as the National Systems Redesign Steering Committee.
She has earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters in Allied Health Education with a nutrition emphasis, also at Eastern Kentucky University. A member of the Senior Executive Service and the American College of Health Care Executives, Ms. Adams is also a graduate of the 2005 Leadership VA class and a graduate of the first VA Executive Career Field (ECF) class.
Among her many awards and honors earned throughout her career include the VHA Mentor of the Year in 2012 and Eastern Kentucky University’s College of Consumer Science, Alumni of the Year for 2008.
