Generosity to Veterans, employees shown from ‘Gamecock country’, local organizations

Story by Jennifer Scales, Public Affairs Office Columbia VA Health Care System

The University of South Carolina Athletic Department along with AllSouth Credit Union and Brain Balance of Lexington has taken part in this giving season to Veteran employees of the Columbia VA Health Care System who formerly served their country in uniform.

Nearly 600 tickets were donated for the USC men’s basketball matchup between the Wofford Terriers and the Gamecock matchup scheduled for Nov. 26.

Food baskets filled with the traditional meal trimmings were also prepared and donated to Veterans.

Chief of Engagement and Community Relations for the Columbia VAHCS, Tammy Finney, remarked on the contributions from everyone.

“It’s great to have the community come in to support our ‘Veterans who serve Veterans’, especially during the holiday season,” Finney said. “The employees are doing what they normally accomplish throughout the year, and for someone to recognize them for that…well, that’s just really special.”

In addition to the baskets from AllSouth Credit Union and Brain Balance of Lexington, the Voluntary Service Office supplemented each with a $25 Visa card for their meat purchase.

Yolaunda Mincey, a VSO volunteer, enjoyed being a part of the handouts. “It’s exciting to see everyone come to get these gifts. It seems to be a really great treat for them,” Mincey said.
